2014 Buick Achiever to Be Honored at UNCF’s ‘An Evening of Stars’
On April 13, Spelman College senior and Buick Achievers Scholarship recipient, Nartezya Dykes, will be among the honorees at the United Negro College Fund’s 35th annual An Evening of Stars broadcast. The annual program honors those students who are achieving their goals in order to inspire those who are in the process of setting their own.
Over the course of more than two decades, General Motors and the General Motors Foundation have donated more than $15 million to the United Negro College Fund.
The GM Foundation is also responsible for funding the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, which has awarded approximately $16.5 million to 3,300 students since 2011. Of those who have benefited from the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, nearly a third have been African-American or Hispanic. Additionally, nearly half of all students to receive funds from the Buick Achievers program are the first in their family to go to college.
Dykes will be honored at An Evening of Stars, which airs April 13 at 10pm on BET Networks.
“This scholarship has opened so many doors for me and my family,” said Dykes, who is pursuing a degree in computer science at Spelman. “It has allowed me to focus solely on receiving the best education possible. I’m setting the standard and inspiring others in my family to reach their full potential by pursuing a higher education.”
Two other Buick Achievers attended the taping of An Evening of Stars: Oneisha Hall from Tuskegee University and Ty’Quish Keyes from Morehouse College.
In order to be considered for the Buick Achievers Scholarship Program, students must be pursuing degrees in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields or fields related to the automotive industry.
Congratulations to Nartezya and this year’s Buick Achievers!
