IIHS Honors Small Car Segment’s Safest
There are plenty of criterion on which modern small cars are based. Now more than ever, they must be extremely fuel efficient, tech savvy, performance-minded, and stylish. But with more drivers on the road now than ever and the icy months looming ahead of us, safety remains of the utmost importance in the segment.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS ) recently released the results of its most recent small overlap font crash tests, finding that six of the twelve small cars tested garnered overall “Good” or “Acceptable” ratings and earning the Top Safety Pick+ distinction. To earn that extra little “+,” vehicles must achieve “Good” ratings in four of five occupant protection test procedures and score a minimum “Acceptable” ranking on the fifth.
The top two scorers were the Honda Civic Sedan and Coupe, respectively, both garnering overall “Good” scores. The Dodge Dart, Ford Focus, Hyundai Elantra, and Scion tC all earned “Good” ratings in four out of five tests and earned the coveted Top Safety Pick+ honor. Since the inception of the Top Safety Pick+, only 25 vehicles from all segments have merited the honor.
Additionally, the IIHS has awarded 29 other 2013 model year small cars with Top Safety Pick honors, ranging from the eco-friendly Chevrolet Cruze (both 2013 and 2014 models) and Nissan Leaf to the powerful Subaru BRZ and Mazda 3 (both sedan and hatchback models).
With safety always a top priority, 2013 appears to be a banner year for the small car segment when it comes to keeping drivers protected.
