Habitat for Humanity and Nissan Canton Assembly Plant Continue House-building Partnership
Employees of the Nissan Canton Manufacturing Plant partner with Habitat for Humanity

The 13-year partnership between Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Capital Area and the dedicated employees of the Nissan Canton Manufacturing Plant has resulted in the construction of 11 homes. The most recent build will allow Tyran Trotter and her two children, Daisha and Tyler, to settle into their new home this month. Trotter has participated in DIY classes, financial instruction, and contributed 250 hours of physical labor and sweat equity on her family’s new home.
“The nearly decade-long partnership between HFHMCA and Nissan has provided numerous affordable homes for the working poor,” said Merrill McKewen, executive director of HFHMCA. “The work of the Nissan employees has created such a positive impact in our community. We look forward to continuing this partnership and building more homes.”
Close to 100 employees of the Nissan Canton Manufacturing Plant worked tirelessly over two months to aid in the construction of Trotter’s home.
“The employees of Nissan Canton look forward to the Habitat build each year,” said Philip Calhoun, senior director, Manufacturing Operations, Nissan Canton Assembly Plant. “We are afforded the opportunity to take our expertise of building great vehicles to building great homes for local Mississippi families.”
Over the years, Nissan North America employees have completed over 97,000 volunteer hours and built homes and worked on home improvement projects in 13 communities across the U.S. The company itself has donated over $15 million to the cause. It was the destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita to prompt the automaker to initially partner with Habitat. The company dispatched 50 trucks and encouraged their hard-working employees to get involved. The rest, as they say, is altruistic history.
