Hyundai Motor America maintained its long streak of monthly sales increases in April, notching a 1 percent gain over the same period last year. Retail sales were up 2 percent.

“Our focus on retail deliveries and working closely with our dealer partners in providing an exceptional shopping and buyer experience resulted in the third straight month of growing retail sales for Hyundai,” said John Cook, Hyundai Motor America’s director of sales operations.

Overall, the automaker sold 55,420 vehicles last month, compared to 55,035 in April 2018. Of those sales, 24,601, or 44 percent, were SUVs. Hyundai is poised to grow its SUV sales even more in the near future, thanks to the 2020 Palisade and the just-announced 2020 Venue. The newly unveiled 2020 Sonata sedan could also provide the automaker with a lift.

“Despite challenging market conditions and slowing industry sales, we are cautiously optimistic as we enter May and typically strong Memorial Day holiday weekend sales,” Cook said.

For April, several Hyundai models achieved sales gains. The automaker’s best performer was the Elantra sedan, with 16,586 sales — an 18 percent increase over April 2018.

Combined sales for Santa Fe and Santa Fe XL SUVs hit 10,746, beating the same period last year by 14 percent.

The award-winning Kona crossover recorded a sales increase of 55 percent, with 5,154 models sold. The redesigned Veloster hatchback made impressive strides, too, with sales soaring by 68 percent to 1,554.

The Accent sedan made a modest gain of just under 1 percent, selling 2,834 units for the month.
