The Honda CR-V is getting electrified, y’all.
The best-selling crossover in America for two decades and counting is getting a substantial new wrinkle for a new year in the form of the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid. Announced by Honda this month, the CR-V Hybrid is the brand’s first hybrid SUV, joining the Accord Hybrid and Insight in implementing the advanced two-motor hybrid-electric system.
In a move that will no doubt ring as music to the ears of some, Honda will build its 2020 CR-V Hybrid in America at its Greensburg, Indiana, plant. To accommodate production of the new hybrid, Honda is investing $4.2 million in Greensburg and creating 34 new jobs. The two-motor hybrid-electric system powering the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid is being built in Russells Point, Ohio, and the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine to which it is mated is being built in Anna, Ohio. In short, that’s a whole lotta ‘Murica.

“The Honda CR-V is the best-selling CUV over the past two decades and the updates we’ve made to the 2020 model, including a new hybrid-electric variant, solidify its position as a leader in the compact SUV market,” said Henio Arcangeli Jr., senior vice president of Automobile Sales at American Honda Motor Co., Inc. “The CR-V Hybrid also signifies our direction to bring Honda hybrid-electric technology to all core models and to invest in the production of electrified vehicles in America.”
Honda expects that its CR-V Hybrid will increase EPA-estimated city fuel economy by upwards of 50 percent, and it’s expected that the hybrid will be more powerful than the conventional CR-V with 212 total system horsepower. The 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid will also be the first vehicle in the United States that combines the two-motor hybrid powertrain with all-wheel drive.
To distinguish the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid from the refreshed CR-V, Honda is giving the vehicle five-LED bar-type fog lights, a blue Honda H emblem on its grille, hybrid badging, and a concealed tailpipe. Inside, the differences include a push-button gear selector, a unique instrument panel that shows information on power and charging status, and deceleration selector paddles on the steering wheel.
The 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid will also receive a new Acoustic Vehicle Alerting System, which uses a front bumper-mounted speaker to emit an audible alert when operating in EV mode to alert pedestrians of your presence.
Expect to see the 2020 Honda CR-V Hybrid at dealers nationwide in the early part of 2020.
