2015 VW e-Golf is Almost Here, Very Blue
The Golf family will be getting greener (or bluer, perhaps) when the 2015 VW e-Golf makes its debut in select markets toward the end of the year. Volkswagen’s first fully electric offering in the United States is the latest offering in Volkswagen’s Think Blue® eco-friendly initiative and the next step in VW’s quest to be the world’s foremost e-mobility automaker by 2018.
Where the e-Golf differs from other EV offerings is that it does not devalue power and performance in order to get its zero emission results. The e-Golf is powered by an EEM-85 synchronous permanent-magnet AC motor that generates 115 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque, meaning that this EV is as energetic as it is efficient.
As with the Golf, Golf TDI, and Golf SportWagen, the 2015 VW e-Golf is built upon the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB), which enabled designers to save precious interior space by storing the lithium-ion battery in a frame in the vehicle floor, under the front and rear seats and in the center tunnel.
All told, the battery can charge to about 80 percent capacity in 30 minutes. To assuage those still uncertain about EV reliability, a Roadside Assistance Plan ensures that you will never be stranded should you find yourself without enough juice to get home.
The interior is built to make the e-Golf’s ride an almost completely silent one, and standard and available features include touchscreen navigation system; VW Car-Net® connected services; Keyless entry with push-button start; heatable front seats; a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel; Bluetooth® technology; V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces; available SiriusXM® Satellite Radio; a rear-view camera; and Park Distance Control.
The 2015 VW e-Golf will also boast three unique driving profiles for greater energy preservation (“Normal,” “Eco,” and “Eco+”) and three levels of regenerative braking(“D1”, “D2”, and “D3”/”B”) to ensure that drivers always have enough juice to keep them going.
Volkswagen hasn’t specifically stated which markets in the U.S. will be getting the 2015 VW e-Golf this fall/winter, but it can be pretty well assumed that they’ll be coastal cities.
