AMG 4.0-Liter V8 Biturbo Engine Revealed, is Nuts
The long march toward the total reveal of the Mercedes-AMG GT may well have been the creative decision of someone who loves Johnny Cash’s “One Piece at a Time” just a little bit too much, but today, it resulted in our first look at the all-new AMG 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo Engine, otherwise known as the M178. And you know what? Yeah, maybe there is something to this patience thing. Makes it quite a bit easier to savor the flavor.
Despite a lower displacement, the AMG 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo Engine will generate about 510 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, which is pretty much the same output as its 6.2-liter predecessor.

One of the biggest contributors to this is dry-sump lubrication, which ditches the oil pan and gives the Mercedes-AMG GT a lower center of gravity (55mm lower, to be precise). The location of the two turbochargers in the “Hot Inner” block helps to keep the engine as small as possible and gives the M178 a low power-to-weight ratio (510 hp to 460 lbs).
Mercedes is also promising that the AMG 4.0-liter V8 Biturbo Engine will also vastly improve fuel economy, which seems like a given provided the lower weight, but it remains to be seen just how much savings it amounts to.
The M178 will now stand as the engine du jour for all AMG models moving forward, and that’s a wonderful thing. We’re also on board with Travis Okulski’s suggestion that it find its way beneath the hood of an Aston Martin as a result of the Mercedes/Aston Martin engine-building alliance.
More Mercedes-AMG GT teasers to come soon, we’re quite sure.
