Lexus Endows PGA Golf Management Program
It’s no secret that Lexus loves golf. The brand is a United States Golf Association Partner, and it sponsors several professional golfers. If you’re looking for merchandise to show that you’re a true fan of this luxury automaker when you take to the course, The Lexus Collection has you covered with golf clubs, balls, and more featuring the iconic Lexus badge.
To help the continuation of the golf industry, Lexus recently established “The Lexus Endowment” at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES). Only 19 schools offer a program in PGA Golf Management, and UMES is the only historically black college on that list. The $100,000 endowment will assist students in the PGA Golf Management program study subjects needed to run various types of golf enterprises. In thanks for the contribution, UMES will give the name “The Lexus Driving Range” to the 300-yard driving range during the Art Shell UMES Invitational Golf Tournament this weekend.
Lexus planned the endowment as a way to honor legendary golfer Charlie Sifford, who was the first African-American to join the PGA tour in 1961 and a UMES alumni. As a pro golfer, Sifford was also sponsored by Toyota, making the tie to the company even stronger.
“It is a privilege for Lexus to honor a pioneer like Charlie Sifford and help advance the dreams and aspirations of young, diverse students seeking to establish a career in the golf industry,” according to Jim Colon, vice president African-American business strategy, Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A., Inc. “We enjoyed a long-standing relationship with Sifford going back decades, and so we are proud to be able to commemorate his rich legacy with this endowment.”
