GM has made it clear that it intends to end Australian production of the Holden Commodore by 2017, and if the current 2016 Holden Commodore VFII is indeed the last hurrah, then it’s at least going out with a pretty significant bang.
The Commodore VFII was revealed this past weekend to be the most powerful Commodore built in the namebadge’s 37-year history. It’ll be powered by the same LS3 6.2-liter V8 that is found in the Commodore’s US equivalent, the Chevy SS, and it will deliver a comparable 407 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque.
“We made a commitment to keep this iconic car exciting and relevant for Australian motorists, and that is exactly what we have done. This is the vehicle that our Commodore customers have been asking for,” said Holden Chairman and Managing Director Mark Bernhard.
“Commodore VFII is powerful and refined, it will evoke emotion in its driver and exhibits all of the hallmarks Commodore has become renowned for over the years,” he added. “Holden’s design, engineering and manufacturing teams have produced the best Commodore ever—a vehicle that truly lives up to its reputation and one that the entire company is incredibly proud of. This is the reason Holden is committed to ensuring we will continue to have engineering and design input into Commodore, and every other Holden vehicle in our range, for generations to come.”
The base model will remain equipped with the V6 engine from the previous generation, and a number of new features are being added across the SV6, SS, SSV, SSV, Calais, Calais V, and Caprice V trims. The Commodore FFII hits Australian dealers this October.
