Details on the incident
According to Trejo, he witnessed one car run a red light and then hit another car, causing the hit car to flip over. Inside the overturned car, a grandmother was stuck in the front seat, and a child was strapped into a car seat on the back seat.
Trejo was able to get into the car from one side while a woman entered the car from the other side. The woman unbuckled the child, and Trejo took him out of the car and away from the accident. He believes “the only thing that saved that little kid was his car seat.”
The actor saw immediately that the child had special needs and was clearly scared by the situation. Trejo said his children’s mother works with special-needs children, so he knew how to calm the boy, and he also attempted to keep him faced away from the accident.
To distract the boy from the situation, Trejo said he told the boy, “we have to use our superpowers. So he screamed ‘superpowers’ and we started yelling ‘superpowers.”
Firefighters from the Los Angeles Fire Department arrived at the scene shortly after the crash and were able to get the child’s grandmother out of the front seat. Thankfully, no one was seriously injured.
Take Safety Precautions: Installing a car seat
Car accidents can be very dangerous, so it’s lucky that this crash had a happy ending. Please remember to always buckle up and to put young children in car seats, as they could be life-saving.
