Everything We Know about the Subaru Evoltis
With the automotive industry going full-bore into the EV market, its no surprise that new models are being announced all the time. However, some are a bit more mysterious than others. For example, Subaru has been working behind the scenes on an all-electric vehicle, which we can now confirm will be called the Evoltis. Here’s everything we know.
It’s not a full EV: But the Crosstrek Hybrid is exceptional
The origins of the Evoltis
The Japanese automaker revealed designs for an upcoming — and unnamed — EV at the very beginning of 2020. Soon after, Electrek’s Bradley Berman reported that the vehicle wasn’t likely to see production until at least 2025. However, Berman is now citing news from Japan that states we could see the newly-coined Evoltis as early as 2021.
A killer collaboration
According to multiple sources, it’s widely expected that Subaru will join forces with Toyota to bring the Evoltis to life. Martin Bigg, a writer for CarBuzz, explains that the collaboration will produce a platform for “midsize and large passenger cars, as well as a C-segment SUV similar in size to the Subaru Crosstrek.” Bigg also mentions that this isn’t the beginning of a new relationship, as the technology that powers the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is based on the Toyota Prius’ powertrain.
How will the Evoltis look and perform?
This is where things get a little bit fuzzy. Electrek’s Berman says that the Evoltis may be a 280-horsepower crossover with all-wheel-drive and an estimated rage of about 300 miles on a single charge. Similarly, CarBuzz’s Bigg’s interpretation of concept photos places the new EV at about the same size as the Crosstrek. Neither Subaru nor Toyota have released any official details regarding the Evoltis, so take these estimates with a grain of salt.
When can we expect to learn more?
As unsatisfying as it is to say, there’s no real way to tell exactly when Subaru will officially unveil the Evoltis — especially in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent cancellation of several prominent auto shows. Most educated guesses put the reveal at the 2021 Tokyo Auto Show, which is currently set to take place in October 2021. However, it’s entirely possible that we may not get to see the Evoltis for ourselves for years, so don’t get too excited just yet.
