Ford has been helping keep the M1 safe for six decades, and it’s celebrating the 60th anniversary of the legendary roadway by pairing its new Police Mondeo Hybrid Wagon with a classic 1959 Ford Zephyr police wagon for a lovely little photo op.

The new Ford Police Mondeo Hybrid Wagon is being put into service in the U.K., offering a homologated 99 grams of CO2 emissions per the new testing standards when driving in hybrid mode and zero emissions when driving in all-electric mode. What’s more, the new Mondeo Hybrid Wagon is quite stylish and spacious, offering plenty of interior space that makes it all the more appealing to citizens and LEOs.

“The Ford Mondeo hybrid pulls away silently, produces zero emissions when running on electric, and does not require plugging in to recharge,” said Ford of Britain Fleet Director Owen Gregory. “Factor in the estate’s extra space and this becomes the idea M1 motorway mile muncher for families and police fleets alike.”

Ford paired its new 2019 Mondeo Hybrid Wagon with a 1959 MkII Ford Zephyr, the only surviving police vehicle that monitored the M1 at the time of its opening in 1959. Today, the M1 is quite a bit safer with barriers to prevent drivers from ending up on the hard shoulder and speed limits. It also boasts a smart motorway section — between junctions 13 and 16 — that leverages the hard shoulder by turning it into an additional lane for traveling.

“Just as cars have changed over these past 60 years, we’re continuing to improve the motorway network to keep journeys smooth and safe for the millions of drivers who depend on them every day,” said Chris Smith, Highways England’s assistant safety coordinator for the East of England.
