It was back in 2009 when Ford debuted its EcoBoost technology. The revolutionary powertrain combined turbocharging and direct-injection for the first time in order to bolster fuel economy, while delivering the power the Detroit automaker’s customers had come to expect. It was been only four short years, but Ford has produced its two millionth EcoBoost engine.
“Ford EcoBoost delivers great performance with lower fuel bills, a recipe that is proving incredibly popular with consumers around the world,” said Joe Bakaj, vice president, powertrain engineering for Ford, in a press release. “EcoBoost engines are attracting new customers to the Ford brand every day, and our plants are working hard to keep up with demand.”
Demand for EcoBoost technology is continuing to rise and Ford is bolstering output in order to keep up. In 2012, Ford was producing EcoBoost engines at a rate of 65,000 annually. Today, that number is up to 100,000, which has Ford on pace to pump out 1.2 million EcoBoost engines in 2013.
EcoBoost technology is showing no signs of slowing down, and Ford will undoubtedly reach its next two million manufactured a lot faster than its first. If you were buying a Ford vehicle, would it be equipped with an EcoBoost engine?
