The vehicles sold by Genesis are finally old enough to be judged on their long-term dependability, and the results are positive. The Korean luxury brand and the Genesis G80 sedan came away with wins in their first year of eligibility for the annual J.D. Power annual Vehicle Dependability Study.

Genesis captured the No. 1 overall ranking among all brands that were included in the 2020 dependability study. At the individual model level, the G80 won the midsize premium car segment.

“In a constantly improving business like the automotive industry, you’ve got to be there for your customers,” said Mark Del Rosso, the CEO of Genesis Motor North America. “These awards, given years after these cars were initially sold, demonstrate our commitment to providing industry-leading reliability.”

The annual dependability study by J.D. Power ranks three-year-old vehicles according to a “problems per 100 vehicles” or PP100 grade. Vehicles with fewer problems reported by their original owners over a 12-month-period rank more highly.

Genesis scored 89 PP100, which comes out to less than one problem per vehicle. That’s a 34 percent improvement on the industry average. The brand notes that it got especially high marks for its HVAC system, interior and seating, and overall driving experience.

The youngest brand in the auto industry, Genesis has only been selling cars in the U.S. since the end of 2016. This was the first year that J.D. Power could assess the brand for the annual dependability study.

Two Genesis models were eligible for the study: the G80 and the G90. The G80 came out on top in its segment. This model has already gained acclaim for its three powerful engine options, refined interior, and advanced tech. Now, it can add long-term reliability to its long list of attractive qualities as well.
