When considering exciting destinations in California, the state’s capital city is often overlooked.  Once a thriving riverfront pioneer town, Sacramento now primarily exists as a historic district, and visitors shouldn’t underestimate all that the beautiful city has to offer. From educational and historic sites to political and family-friendly attractions, everyone will find something to keep their attention.

Recommended Modes of Transportation

A car is by far the most desired mode of transportation for getting around Sacramento. Roads are easy to navigate, with numbered streets running North and South and lettered streets running East and West. South of the city center, the streets are named “Avenue” after the lettered streets run out.

If you’re exploring Historic Old Sacramento, the Riverfront, and the California State Railroad Museum, getting around on foot or by bike is easy. All are located within a 5 minute walk from the train station, and the Capital building is a 15 minute walk from Old Sacramento.

Major Highways and Roadways to Know

Sacramento is conveniently situated at the intersection of Interstate 5 and Interstate 80 and is located at the western end of US Route 50.

Downtown Sacramento is bounded by Broadway, Front Street, and Alhambra Boulevard.

Alternative Ways of Seeing the City

Take a steam train ride at the Central Pacific Railroad Freight Depot for an authentic locomotive experience. The Railroad Museum operates these 40-minute excursions which are pulled by an historic steam locomotive along the nearby levees. Rides are offered hourly on Saturdays and Sundays from April through September.

Best Places to Park

Parking in Old Sacramento can be scarce, but reasonably priced parking structures can be found in the K Street Mall, where visitors will find a modern, short, and safe walkway between K Street Mall and Old Sacramento.

Airports and Car Rentals

Sacramento International Airport serves the Sacramento area, offering flights to Hawaii, Mexico, and all regions of the U.S.

Rental cars agencies are located at the rental car terminal, where shuttles transport passengers every ten minutes between there and the airport terminal. Be sure to reserve your rental in advance to ensure a car that meets your needs is waiting for you!
