General Motors will soon integrate an array of new infotainment technologies into its vehicles through a team-up with Google.
GM plans to add Google-powered voice assistance, embedded navigation, and in-vehicle apps to Buick, GMC, Cadillac, and Chevrolet models. Each of these technologies will be designed to smoothly sync with customers’ smartphones and other electronic devices.
“We are re-envisioning the future in-vehicle experience, and this is just the first step,” said Santiago Chamorro, GM’s vice president for global connected customer experience. “The integration of select Google technology and services into our vehicle infotainment systems will foster a more connected and efficient driving experience.”
However, GM says it will still offer a variety of informational and connected services that can’t easily be provided by Google.
“We will continue to offer our own unique infotainment features that only GM can deliver, such as service recommendations, vehicle health status, in-vehicle commerce, and more, with the Google applications and services complementing our offerings,” said Chamorro.
GM infotainment systems will incorporate Google Assistant technology, enabling drivers to make hands-free calls and texts, play podcasts and music, and adjust climate settings. New embedded navigation will come via Google Maps and include real-time traffic information, route planning, information on gas and charging stations, and voice control. While behind the wheel, drivers will also be able to access a wide range of apps through the Google Play Store.
Look for these new Google features to become available on GM vehicles starting sometime in 2021.
