The US Department of Energy (DOE) recently highlighted GM’s workplace charging efforts as a model for other companies to follow. General Motors was among 13 founding companies that last year pledged with the DOE to increase workplace charging throughout the United States by 10 within five years; it was called the Workplace Charging Challenge.

The DOE feels that GM has been a standout company among the 150 companies now participating in the challenge. In the last four years, The General has installed a whopping 473 electric vehicle charging stations across 45 sites in the United States. Those stations provide for both 120V and 240V charging. In addition, GM has installed nearly 6,000 charging stations at Chevy and Cadillac dealers across the country, for charging the Chevy Volt, they Chevy Spark EV, the Cadillac ELR, and any future GM EV products.

General Motors hopes to manufacture half a million vehicles with some form of electrification each year by 2017, meaning charging stations will be important everywhere—not just at GM businesses but at all businesses. In fact, Fast Lane reports that employees of companies that offer electric charging stations are 20 times more likely to invest in an electric vehicle. People have the desire to change; they just need the means to do it.

Congrats to GM on being recognized for its workplace charging efforts. We hope to see more companies adopting The General’s methods in the coming years.
