GMSA Wins SJM Flex Award at Exporter of the Year Ceremony
General Motors South Africa earned the SJM Flex Award in the environmental category at the annual Exporter of the Year awards ceremony. The award was the result of continued efforts toward greener manufacturing and transportation processes. Accepting the award were Rashmin Joshi (SME India), Huldah Solomon (Site Environmental Engineer), Ncedisa Mzuzu (Group Environmental Manager: Africa), Mbongeni Mbiko (Graduate in Training), and Team Manager Angus Clark.
According to General Motors Environmental Group Manager, Africa Ncedisa Mzuzu, GMSA succeeds in its goal of environmental conscientiousness by focusing on the reduction of waste. According to Mzuzu, GMSA has cut waste use by 60% this year, and the compression of waste through the use of balers at four sites in Port Elizabeth has also reduced the transportation of waste by 87%.
GMSA has also decreased its energy usage through battery-operated tools and equipment, air-operated tools, resulting in a 46% decrease in energy used per vehicle produced over the past four years.
GMSA was also praised for preserving natural habitats surrounding its facilities and focusing on conservation of plant and animal species.
