Honda Takes Eight National Titles at Daytona (No, Not the 500)
At Daytona Motor Speedway, cars often go fast to great fanfare.
But there might be a few more NASCAR fans than there are Sport Car Club of America fans, which could explain how Honda’s immense dominance at this weekend’s 2015 SCCA National Championship Runoffs flew a bit under the radar.
But veering off the beaten path of American beers and shirtless superfans means a better chance to win big, as Honda and Acura racers proved with their eight national titles.
Drivers representing the Japanese automaker competed in 12 of 28 races, taking home the glory in two thirds of their starts. Honda and Acura earned podium places in all but one of the 12 events in which they competed.
“This has been just a fantastic Runoffs for our Honda Racing Line members,” said Jeff Barrow, HPD manager, commercial motorsports. “Our drivers and teams contended for victory in a dozen races, and the results speak volumes for both our grassroots motorsports efforts in recent years and the skills of our racers.”
Honda Racing Line is an initiative founded in 2009 that looks to provide promising members with the backing of Honda Performance Development in order to dominate their chosen motorsport. Why they chose it over NASCAR or Indy, though, we may never know.
