Each year, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) evaluates new cars based on their performance in crash tests and names the best of them Top Safety Picks. Some models are so impressive in their safety features that they earn the distinction of being named Top Safety Pick Plus. The 2016 Scion iA was one of the latest models to receive such a distinction.
The Scion iA—a completely new model for 2016—comes with a standard front crash prevention system, and is the least expensive vehicle on the market to do so. The sedan received the highest possible score of “good” in all IIHS crash tests, which includes the tricky-to-pass small overlap crash test. The iA was able to avoid a collision completely at 12 mph because of its standard low-speed crash prevention system.
The Scion iA joins the recently-named 2016 Lexus ES as two Top Safety Pick Plus models that fall under the Toyota umbrella. Altogether, the Japanese automaker boasts 10 vehicles with this outstanding distinction.
