Looking for a good, white-knuckled thriller for respite from the wave of sub-par blockbusters saturating theaters this summer? Cop Car, a unique crime thriller being released August 7th, might be up your alley.

Focus Features, which purchased Cop Car at the Sundance Festival in January for about $2 million, released the full trailer for the film today. You can watch it below.

Is Kevin Bacon a Killer in Cop Car? His Mustache Sure Is.

In the Cop Car trailer, Kevin Bacon plays a corrupt sheriff with a secret to hide–a secret which two young, unsuspecting boys discover when they go for a joyride in an abandoned police cruiser (an old Ford). Once the dark secret of the shady, small-town lawman is unearthed, it becomes a heart-pounding cat-and-mouse pursuit.

Based on the premise, it sounds like a slowly-building, 88-minute ride with more tension and gritty violence than your mamma can handle.

The trailer, and some early reviews for the movie, have compared Cop Car to the work of the Coen Brothers, especially No Country for Old Men. The film appears to blend coming-of-age adventure with the grit of a more serious thriller. Like a more edgy Stand By Me. It fits right into the trend of films after the recent Mud and Joe.

Cop Car, directed by Jon Watts, promises to be the breakthrough feature for the writer/producer/director, whose previous work was the graphic body horror film, Clown. He’s sure come a long way from his early production work on the Onion News Network.

If Cop Car winds up being as good as it looks, we could probably start taking Kevin Bacon seriously again–apart from that mustache.
