Lexus RC F Performance Coupe Unleashed at 2014 NAIAS
Lexus seems content to use four words to describe the all-new Lexus RC F Performance Coupe that it debuted at the North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) this week: “Faster, Sharper, Lower, Wider.” Despite how much this sequence of words reminds us—rather inexplicably—of the unfortunate musical career of Savage Garden (side note: Savage Garden was neither savage nor a garden…discuss!), we count ourselves gladly among those excited by this powerful and passionate concept.
The Lexus RC F Performance Coupe roars to life with the power of an all-new 5.0-liter 32-valve V8 that utilizes the Atkinson cycle at cruising speeds (a first for Lexus performance engines) to enhance fuel economy, then switches to the Otto cycle with the rpms go up to dole out a monstrous 450 horsepower and 383 lb-ft torque. The new engine is mated to a fine-tuned eight-speed Sports Direct Shift (SPDS) transmission for better throttle response and user-control of torque and power.
Additionally, the Lexus RC F Performance Coupe incorporates a Torque Vectoring Differential (TVD), which is also unprecedented in Lexus vehicles, which has three driving modes for ideal performance: Standard, Slalom, and Track.
On the outside, the RC F looks strikingly similar to the base RC Coupe, adding a unique grille, raised hood with cooling vent, and active rear spoiler. On the inside, one will fine all-new combination meters that make information-reading easy, high back seats for better comfort, and an elliptical cross section steering wheel for enhanced control.
In his remarks, Lexus Group VP and GM Jeff Bracken stated that the Lexus RC F Performance Coupe would go on sale “later this fall,” and that projected retail volume should equal around 1,400 a month. We can’t wait to get behind the wheel of one; you might even say that we know we’ll love it before we actually meet it. Aw, man…stupid Savage Garden.
