Q80 Inspiration Hybrid Powertrain is Powerful, Proficient, Promising

Q80 Inspiration hybrid powertrain

The Infiniti Q80 Inspiration hybrid powertrain generates 550 horsepower and returns around 43 mpg

While there’s a lot to like about what Infiniti put out there at the Paris Motor Show with its Q80 Inspiration concept, one aspect that seems deserving of particular attention is a brand-new hybrid powertrain that generates 550 horsepower and 553 lb-ft of torque and is the next natural step in the brand’s Adaptive Direct Response Hybrid system.

Infiniti fitted the Q80 Inspiration with a 3.0-liter twin turbo V6 engine that generates 450 horsepower entirely on its own, pairing it with a lithium-ion battery-powered electric motor, which in and of itself generates 100 horsepower.  The hybrid powertrain also enables the vehicle to split torque 50/50 between front and rear wheels in situations that demand better grip, and can be manually configured from RWD to AWD at the press of a button.

This latest iteration of the brand’s Direct Response Hybrid system returns an estimated 42.8 mpg and reduces carbon emissions to around 129g/k.

“The compact V6 engine replaces capacity with a smarter intent, to deliver no compromise performance and efficiency,” said Francois Bancon, Infiniti Vice President, Product Strategy. “Modern consumers are interested in smart powertrains like this. We believe that with a full 550 hp available, this car will appeal to drivers in search of excitement.

“This engine uses the latest hybrid technology. Our performance hybrid is socially responsible, but when you need it you have all the thrill and sensation you require. It’s the perfect blend of science and sustainability.”

Given that Infiniti has called the Q80 Inspiration a portent for future vehicle lineups, it can be naturally assumed that some variation of this powerful hybrid powertrain and the Adaptive Direct Response Hybrid system will find its way into a production version of the Q80.
