Spin, an entity of Ford Smart Mobility focused on urban mobility through scooters, has revealed its plans for a next-generation scooter. The third-gen Spin scooters will be larger, safer, and offer better battery life than their predecessors and are expected to launch in August in several major cities.

Spin began its trial of the third-gen Spin scooter in Baltimore in June, demonstrating improvements made to its frame, structure, platform, and battery. The new scooters boast better braking, acceleration, capability on hills, and shock absorption. New security screws also make the scooters harder to tamper with or vandalize, and a new battery enables the latest Spins to hit 37.5 miles of range on a single charge.

“In our testing of the next edition Spin scooter, we have seen a significant increase in utilization and our customers are taking more rides and traveling longer distances,” said co-founder and Chief Operating Officer Zaizhuang Cheng. “We will continue to support the creation of more durable and robust scooters in order to meet the market demand, and provide our riders with a safe, smooth, affordable, and reliable ride.”

Ford Smart Mobility acquired Spin in 2018 and has effectively managed to quadruple the company’s markets to 47 cities and college campuses. Since its acquisition by Ford, Spin reports that its fleet has increased by an astounding 1,900 percent while the number of rides it has made possible has grown by 1,100 percent.

The new, third-gen Spin scooters will initially begin appearing in Denver; Kansas City; Los Angeles; Memphis; Minnesota; Portland; and Washington, D.C., next month. More markets are expected to follow.
