Volkswagen showed off the 2019 VW Jetta GLI at the 2019 Chicago Auto Show this morning, revealing a more performance-driven sedan than its predecessor. This was due to the addition of the VW Golf GTI engine and technology.

The 2019 GLI utilizes the 2.0-liter TSI four-cylinder engine, which cranks out 228 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. It comes with a standard six-speed manual transmission or an available seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic.

Volkswagen Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Derrick Hatami, heralded the 2019 Jetta GLI as the “the GTI of sports sedans,” noting it to be one of the few sedans on the market to still offer a manual and a paddle-shifter gearbox.

VW also beefed up the GLI’s performance in the corners with a new Limited-Slip Differential that reduces understeer. Its handling and feel on the road improves with its sports suspension, Golf-R front brakes, and available DCC adaptive damping.

As VW unveiled the sedan with two cars sporting shiny light blue and red exterior paint jobs. The GTI leaves its mark on the front of the car with a red accent stripe across the front grille. It also flaunts side skirts, a new rear bumper with dual-exhaust pipes, a rear spoiler, and 18-inch alloy wheels.

Hatami says that the performance car enthusiasts will be a target audience for the GLI.

“For us, we still see a lot of hope and potential in this segment, and this is a great addition to our performance lineup,” Hatami said.

Expect the 2019 Jetta GLI to debut later this year.
