When the Volkswagen Atlas was officially introduced in 2016 at the LA Auto Show, it was lauded for its interior comfort and overall size, as it was VW’s largest model yet. The German brand decided to build off of that same Atlas wheelbase and provide just as much interior comfort in a slightly smaller five-seat configuration. At its state-of-the-art Chattanooga factory, executives and assembly line workers celebrated the global reveal of the all-new 2020 Atlas Cross Sport.

Growing Family: See what makes the VW Atlas the perfect family vehicle

“Building off the success of the Atlas seven-seater midsize SUV, we see an opportunity for a five-seater model that offers even more style and almost as much interior space,” said Scott Keogh, CEO of Volkswagen Group of America. “We look forward to entering this growing segment with the Atlas Cross Sport, which offers outstanding Volkswagen technology, driver-assist features, style, and value.”

Exterior styling

On the outside, the Atlas Cross Sport looks similar to the Atlas. But when you look a bit closer, you notice subtle design elements like the three-bar grille and how its middle bar seamlessly integrates with the new light signature. The front bumper and hood have also been reshaped for a more aggressive, athletic design. The R-Line trims come with even more refined exterior updates, including 21-inch aluminum-alloy wheels and chrome and piano black treatments near the lower front air scoops.

Interior space

Because the new Atlas Cross Sport sits on the same 117.3-inch wheelbase as the original Atlas, its shorter length and height don’t compromise any interior room. In fact, the all-new SUV features an incredible 111.8 cubic feet of passenger space. If you need to haul any cargo, you’ll have 40.3 cubic feet of space behind the second-row seats or 77.8 cubic feet with those seats folded down.

Tech updates

With each new model, every automaker is adding the latest and greatest tech features to accommodate a modern lifestyle. VW did just that with the 2020 Atlas Cross Sport. The SUV is now able to be equipped with available wireless charging as well as the Fender premium audio system with 12 speakers. On top of this, Volkswagen added two new safety features to the Atlas Cross Sport: Traffic Jam Assist and Dynamic Road Sign Display. The TJA system works in tandem with Adaptive Cruise Control and the Lane Keeping System, using radar sensors to help maintain following distance in stop-and-go traffic while going 0-37 mph. Dynamic Road Sign Display will detect important road signs like school zones, speed limits, and no-passing areas, and will show these to you on the navigation system screen while you drive.

The 2020 Volkswagen Atlas Cross Sport will be available at eight trim levels: S, SE, SE w/Tech, SE w/Tech R-Line, SEL, SEL R-Line, SEL Premium, and SEL Premium R-Line. Pricing and additional details will be unveiled closer to the official launch of the new SUV in Spring 2020.
