Volkswagen is still considering the idea of unleashing a truck in the U.S. market.
You may recall that the automaker debuted a concept for the Atlas Tanoak pickup truck last year at the New York Auto Show. Similar to the Honda Ridgeline, it utilized a unibody design which many of the auto show’s attendees went bananas over.

Looking Ford-ward
The opportunity presents quite a temptation for Volkswagen. With the recent marriage to Ford, their hope and ambitions of crossing this new frontier could become a reality soon enough.
When Ford and Volkswagen tied the knot, Ford promised to build a version of its Ranger for the Volkswagen market outside the U.S.
“We have opportunities with Ford,” Volkswagen of American boss Scott Keogh said in a Roadshow interview. “It’s something we are 100 percent investigating.”
Past product crisis
Volkswagen has been down a similar road before, but it was a disaster. However, when you fail, go back to the drawing board and try, try again.

It had a brief engagement with Chrysler in the late 2000s. At this time, the automaker was trying to capitalize off the success of the Dodge Grand Caravan and Town & Country minivans with the Routan.
The van was an expensive flop, as Volkswagen ended production of the five-door minivan a few years later and rerouted its focus to sedans and SUVs. Still, the car company believes it can enter the truck race with a contender and satisfactory product.
“I think this is an opportunity for Volkswagen, if you look at how we position the brand,” Keogh said.
