Augmented Reality Technology for Volkswagen XL1 Repairs

2014 VW XL1

The futuristic 2014 VW XL1

The Volkswagen XL1 was introduced earlier this year with its avant-garde design and staggeringly impressive 261 MPG. Hold on to your seats (or whatever you can grab in this sleek car) as it now slides back into the limelight for Volkswagen’s introduction of an iPad app using augmented reality technology for repairs.

Just when you thought this car worthy of George Jetson couldn’t get any more futuristic, you might think twice during Volkswagen XL1 repairs. The folks at Volkswagen teamed up with the techies at Metaio to create an iPad app that shows Volkswagen XL1 technicians how to fully repair each part of the vehicle.

The app, named MARTA for Mobile Augmented Reality Technical Assistance, uses the iPad camera to pull up a virtual image of the car. The image calls up a list of various repair jobs needed for the portion of the car seen on screen, as well as tools and other information necessary in making the repairs.

This next-generation repair manual is a perfect match for the 2104 VW XL1. Only 250 of are currently being tested; so unfortunately, you may have to wait a bit to get your hands on all of this technology, but it will definitely be worth the wait.
