If you’ve been shopping for a new GMC SUV, you’ve likely considered the 2019 GMC Terrain and 2019 GMC Acadia. But how do these models differ from each other? Here’s a brief look at the distinct features and capabilities of each.

Dimensions
Overall, the Acadia is the more spacious of the two vehicles. It can accommodate up to seven passengers and it boasts a maximum cargo volume of 79 cubic feet. By contrast, the Terrain has room for only five passengers and it has a maximum cargo volume of just 63.3 cubic feet.
Despite the Terrain’s more compact interior dimensions, it does offer 29.6 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat. The Acadia, by comparison, has only 12.8 cubic feet behind the rear seat.
Performance
For a more thrilling drive and better towing power, go with the Acadia. Its standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine puts out 193 horsepower and 188 lb-ft of torque, and it’s also available with a 3.6-liter V6 engine which is capable of 310 horsepower and 271 lb-ft of torque. The Acadia can also tow up to 4,000 pounds when properly equipped.
If you want moderate towing and peak fuel efficiency, however, go with the Terrain. It can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped, which is 2,000 pounds more than last year’s model. It also yields up to 30 miles per gallon on the highway when you select the standard 1.5-liter turbocharged engine and FWD option.
Features
The Acadia and the Terrain both offer a wide variety of available amenities. But the base trim of the Terrain comes with a few more standard features than the same version of the Acadia. For example, the base Terrain model includes cargo tie-downs, height-adjustable safety belts, and a theft-deterrent radio. And the Denali trims of both models are comparably luxurious and outfitted.
Price
With a starting MSRP of $25,000, the base model of the 2019 Terrain costs nearly $1K less than last year’s version. The top-of-the-line Denali trim comes with a price tag of $38,295. By contrast, the 2019 Acadia has a starting price of $32,800, which is nearly $3K higher than the previous model year’s starting price. The Denali version of the Acadia has a starting MSRP of $45,500.
Conclusion: Go with the Terrain if you can make do with a five-passenger seating capacity and a 3,500-pound towing rating. It comes at a significantly more affordable price and yields better mileage due to its petite size and lighter weight. If you need to transport seven passengers and could use a bit more towing brawn, go with the Acadia. It offers a more spacious interior when you collapse the rear seats and it offers a 4,000-pound towing capacity.
