2017 Toyota Prius Overview

Decrease Font Size Increase Font Size Text Size Print This Page

Toyota became the undisputed king of hybrid cars in 1997 with the Prius, and nearly two decades later, that hasn’t changed. While its new exterior redesign has been controversial, there’s no denying that the 2017 Toyota Prius remains the most advanced and efficient hybrid you can buy for the money.

On the outside, the 2017 Toyota Prius is all drama. It has the same overall wedge shape that has characterized it since the beginning, but is longer, wider, and lower to the ground than before. Combined with the character creases in the bodyside panels and the angular headlights and taillights, the 2017 Toyota Prius has true head-turning potential and massive curbside presence. It may be quiet thanks to its hybrid powertrain, but it certainly won’t go unnoticed.

2017 Toyota Prius Performance

The 2017 Toyota Prius is powered by Toyota’s signature Hybrid Synergy Drive, a 1.8-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine paired with a permanent magnet AC electric motor, which draws power from a lithium-ion battery pack (or nickel-metal hydride batteries on the base trim). Together, the two produce a system total of 121 horsepower and 120 lb-ft of torque, sent to the front wheels via an Electronically-controlled Continuously Variable Transmission (E-CVT).

The 2017 Toyota Prius is very well equipped, even at the lowest trim level. Every Prius comes standard with dual 4.2-inch customizable color information displays, a 6.2-inch color touchscreen, a USB port, Bluetooth streaming, Siri Eyes Free, hands-free phone link, voice recognition, and more. The interior materials look upscale and the clever design of the front console contributes to a greater feeling of room at the front, while–through some wizardry–Toyota managed to make the rear seat feel more spacious despite it being smaller than in the past.
