2020 Ford Explorer Plug-In Hybrid Revealed for Europe
Ford revealed at its Go Further event in Amsterdam this month that Europe will get a plug-in hybrid version of the all-new Ford Explorer. The 2020 Ford Explorer Plug-In Hybrid, available in ST-Line and Platinum trim levels, will pair the 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 with an electric motor to generate 444 horsepower and 620 lb-ft of torque and return an estimated 25 miles of pure-electric driving range.
“The Explorer is a true SUV — designed for families with a real sense of adventure — so it was essential that the Explorer Plug-In Hybrid featured a powertrain that could haul anything from boats to horseboxes,” said Matthias Tonn, Explorer chief program engineer for Europe.
Hot Technologies: Why FordPass makes the ownership experience even easier
The 2020 Ford Explorer Plug-In Hybrid features standard Intelligent All-Wheel Drive and seven Drive Modes including Sport, Tow/Haul, and Deep Snow and Sand. These driving modes are selectable via the Terrain Management System through the 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster display. To take full advantage of the PHEV powertrain, the Explorer Plug-In Hybrid will also offer EV Auto, EV Now, EV Later, and EV Charge mores for a fully customizable driving experience.
Standard for the Explorer Plug-In Hybrid are several intelligent safety features including all-new Reverse Brake Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop & Go, Blind Spot Information System with Cross Traffic Alert, and Lane-Centering.
“The most versatile SUV we have ever offered for customers in the region is able to carry seven adults in comfort, tow a 2,500-kilogram (5,512-pound) trailer with ease, and still deliver 40 kilometers (25 miles) zero-emissions city driving range,” said Roelant de Waard, vice president, Marketing, Sales & Service, Ford of Europe. “Technologies like our 10.1-inch touchscreen and Reverse Brake Assist debut in Europe to make the Explorer Plug-In Hybrid supremely rewarding and easy to drive.”
The Ford Explorer Plug-In Hybrid will go on sale in Europe later this year. Ford announced a 2020 Explorer Hybrid for the United States and a plug-in hybrid of its Explorer-based Police Interceptor Utility, but it has not specified plans to make the Explorer Plug-In Hybrid available in America.
