November 17 is National Adoption Day. It’s primarily a holiday meant to celebrate families’ adoption of children into their homes. However, we’d like to put a car-themed spin on the occasion by highlighting the benefits of adopting an electric vehicle (EV). Here are just five reasons to consider an EV for your next vehicle.

Help the environment

EVs run on 100 percent clean energy, so they reduce zero emissions. This means that each time you go for a drive, you’re contributing to a healthier environment and helping slow the process of climate change.

Save on gas

EVs run on battery power, rather than fuel. So, buying one will eliminate the need to put gas in the tank, which will let you retain an estimated $2-4K from your income each year, as Conserve Energy Future claims.

Low maintenance

Due to their electric technology, EV engines don’t need lubrication. This helps reduce maintenance fees since you’ll have to service the vehicle less frequently than a conventional, fuel-powered model.

Protective technology

Even though EVs are relatively new on the market, they offer the same level of safety as fuel-powered models. For one thing, they go through the same rigorous fitness and safety tests. Secondly, the technology automatically cuts off the electricity supply to the battery, as soon as the airbags deploy, to help shield passengers from injuries during an accident.

Less noise pollution

EVs have a reputation for being remarkably quiet (creepily quiet, some might say…). Which makes for a quieter driving experience inside the vehicle. Just listen to this silent Chevy Volt.

EVs make such little noise when traveling, that the Volt and other electric models are now required to have a pedestrian alert sound, per the U.S. Department of Transportation’s “quiet” car ruling earlier this year.
