Two Hyundai vehicles are in the running for some of the industry’s most prestigious awards: the North American Car/Utility/Truck of the Year.

These awards are decided each year by a jury of around 50 automotive journalists from around the continent. Earlier this month, the jury released its list of contenders.

The 2020 Hyundai Sonata is on the longlist for Car of the Year with 17 other vehicles. The 2020 Hyundai Palisade is vying for Utility of the Year with 19 competitors.

The list of contenders will be narrowed down to several finalists in September, and the winners will be unveiled in January.

The 2020 Sonata, set to arrive at dealerships this fall, has been completely redesigned for the new model year. On top of its lighter, tougher new platform, Hyundai’s midsize sedan boasts eye-catchingly sleek looks and advanced technologies like Digital Key, shift-by-wire gear selection, and chrome-like exterior LED accent lighting. The hybrid version even offers a solar roof.

The 2020 Palisade recently went on sale and has already proven to be a hit with buyers. As Hyundai’s largest SUV, the three-row Palisade offers plenty of space, power, and style. Along with a huge list of standard safety and infotainment features, the Palisade boasts available options like a hands-free power liftgate, leather trim, and premium audio.

The competition will be fierce, but these two models’ early status as early Car/Utility of the Year contenders bodes well for their appeal among buyers — and for Hyundai’s efforts to expand and strengthen its lineup.
