Ford Reveals First EcoBlue Diesel Engine
While other automakers are being caught cheating emissions tests left and right, Ford this week announced the next phase of diesel engine innovation.
The automaker revealed the 2.0-liter Ford EcoBlue diesel engine this week, a four-cylinder that will be initially offered in the new Transit and Transit Custom. The engine promises 20% more torque than the 2.2-liter TDCi diesel, a quieter vehicle when idling, and improved efficiency and lower emissions.
“Ford’s EcoBoost created a new standard for petrol engines—smaller, more efficient with surprising performance. That same obsession to innovate for the customer is behind our new Ford EcoBlue diesel engine range,” said Jim Farley, chairman and CEO of Ford of Europe. “This new engine lifts fuel efficiency and reduces CO2 by over 10% in Transit, part of Europe’s best-selling commercial vehicle line-up, lowering costs for our customers.”
The engine is a clean-sheet design, and it will be offered with outputs of 105PS (104 horsepower), 130PS (128 horsepower), and 170PS (168 horsepower). Eventually, a 200PS (197 horsepower) version will be offered in passenger vehicles, as will EcoBlue engines with different displacements. At present, only a 1.5-liter EcoBlue engine has been announced.
The first EcoBlue engine will achieve 13% better fuel economy than the outgoing TDCi diesel due to an off-set crank, belt-in-oil, and modular camshafts.
The 2.0-liter EcoBlue will be Ford’s first commercial diesel engine to achieve noise levels, harshness, and vibration comparable to passenger cars.
“The basic structure of an engine can act as a soundboard for the movements happening inside it, just like a bell. So we try to develop a bell that does not ring very well,” said Dominic Evans, NVH specialist, Ford of Europe. “We’ve engineered every significant noise-influencing component of this engine to be quieter and smoother operating—resulting in the most refined diesel commercial vehicles Ford has ever built.”
