Chevy’s Surround Vision Safety Tech Available on 2018 Equinox
In recognition of today being the official start of summer, Chevrolet is calling attention to the safety features found on its vehicles, which could help prevent the potential accidents that occur when kids are out of school and in the driveway.
There are an average of 210 deaths and 15,000 injuries caused by backover crashes each year, according to the US Department of Transportation. The NHTSA estimates that a full 40% of said crashes occur in residential areas, and 24% happen in driveways.
“The majority of backover incidents are caused by the driver not being able to see their immediate surroundings,” says Rondell Burge, Chevy’s researcher of driver behavior. “When you hear about backover or frontover incidents involving parents or grandparents and their little ones, your heart sinks. It’s personal and at Chevy we want to help drivers see as much of their environment as possible to help them avoid the unthinkable. That’s where Surround Vision can help.”
An available safety feature on the all-new 2018 Equinox, Surround Vision technology provides drivers with a 360-degree bird’s view of the area around the vehicle, an invaluable resource when backing up or parking.
The new system incorporates the use of four cameras—a standard Rear Vision Camera, a forward-looking camera tucked into the front grille, and two side-facing cameras under each side mirror. When drivers shift into reverse, the Surround Vision view is displayed on the center stack instrument panel, along with an image from the forward- or rear-facing camera, for multiple viewpoints and maximum safety.
“I have a family and think of them often when doing my research,” says Burge. “My wife is a driver and my three young children are passengers in our vehicles. They’re also the little ones playing in our front yard, running around having fun. Technology offered on the Equinox, like Surround Vision, is designed to give drivers more tools to help them see around their vehicle before they put it in gear.”
In addition to the Equinox, Chevy offers Surround Vision on the 2018 Bolt EV and Traverse. Rear Vision Camera is available on the 2018 Chevy Bolt EV, Camaro, City Express, Colorado, Corvette, Cruze, Equinox, Express, Impala, Malibu, Silverado, Silverado HD, Sonic, Spark, Suburban, Tahoe, Traverse, Trax, and Volt.
