Imagine being good enough at something that you get an award for it 13 years in a row. The 2019 Volkswagen Golf lineup secured a place on the prestigious Car and Driver 10Best list, and in so doing earned the Golf its 13th straight 10Best recognition. This year, the Golf earned high marks for its expansive lineup and the broad appeal that it offers.
“We love all Golfs, and how could we not when the basic package is this good?” wrote Car and Driver’s editors. “The lineup’s broadening range of talents brings the basic car’s inherent goodness into clear relief. Without its brilliant packaging, chassis integrity, and clarity of purpose, none of the many variants could do what they do so well.”

Though the award is shared among all Golf variants — the Golf, e-Golf, Golf GTI, Golf SportWagen, and Golf R — the editors noted that they do play favorites, noting the Golf GTI as the preferred sibling in the Volkswagen Golf family. At least they’re more honest than your parents. The reasons for the Golf GTI standing out to an even greater degree include the 228-horsepower turbo-four, the sport-tuned suspension, and its exterior and interior presentation. The Golf GTI is also offered in a unique Rabbit Edition for 2019 that includes special badging and aesthetic upgrades like 18-inch gloss black aluminum-alloy wheels and a black rear spoiler.

For a vehicle to be considered for the Car and Driver 10Best, it must be an all-new vehicle, a carryover winner from the previous year, a vehicle that was not available to be judged in the previous year, or a vehicle with significant updates. To ensure that theirs isn’t just a list of supercars, the competition caps base price at $90,000.
