Our eyes are up and ahead on the new 2020 Kia Soul, which takes one of the funkiest and most distinctive cars on the road today and makes it even more stylish. But we would be remiss to not do the 2019 Kia Soul its proper diligence as it yields the throne to its successor. The 2019 Soul continues to set a standard for excellence, earning the Kelley Blue Book 5-Year Cost to Own Award for compact cars over the 2019 Hyundai Veloster and 2019 Hyundai Elantra.

“The key advantage that the Soul has over its competitors is its high residual values,” said Eric Ibara, director of 5-Year Cost to Own for Kelley Blue Book. “This year, the Soul ranked third in Best Resale Value, which translates into a low depreciation cost — the factor that accounts for one third of its overall ownership costs. While the Soul is credited with low costs in nearly all 5-Year Cost to Own categories, it also has the lowest financing costs and state fees in its segment.”

The 2019 Kia Soul boasts a KBB-estimated 5-Year Cost to Own of $29,012, which takes into account everything from fuel costs and insurance to repairs and maintenance. The Soul is estimated to be $468 more affordable over five years than the new Veloster and $890 cheaper than the Elantra. What’s more, KBB estimates that the five-year cost of ownership of the 2019 Soul has decreased over $3,000 from the 2018 Kia Soul.
