Ford Mustang is World’s Best-Selling Sports Coupe to Surprise of No One
For the fourth year in a row, the Ford Mustang reigns supreme as the world’s best-selling sports coupe. With a total of 113,066 ‘Stangs sold around the globe in 2018, as well as a 15.4 percent market share, Ford once more asserts itself as the dominant brand in the sports coupe segment.
“We broke the mold when Ford launched the Mustang 55 years ago,” said Jim Farley, Ford president, global markets, who broke the news on National Mustang Day. “Nothing says freedom, the wind in your hair, and the joy of driving like Mustang; it’s an icon. The roar of its V8 on a spring day, there’s nothing better. No wonder it’s the most popular sports coupe in the world.”

According to IHS Markit, the Mustang wasn’t just the best-selling sports coupe on the planet, but it was also the top-selling vehicle in its segment in the United States with 75,842 delivered. This too marks the fourth straight year that the Mustang has been the top-seller in its class, meaning that the sixth-generation pony is un-de-feated by the likes of the Dodge Charger and Chevrolet Camaro.
One of the driving factors for the Mustang’s success in 2018 was the BULLITT, which Ford says exceeded its global sales forecasts by 25 percent. The introduction of a new High Performance Package for the 2020 Mustang, as well as the return of the Mustang Shelby GT500, have the Mustang in position to reclaim its crown yet again in 2019.
Since the launch of the sixth-gen Mustang in 2015, Ford has sold more than 500,000 examples in 146 countries around the globe. With the word on the street being that the sixth-gen might be around for quite a little while longer, we could very well see sales of the current generation surpass 1 million units before it yields to its successor.
