The Origin of GMC’s “Elevation”

GMC brought its full lineup of vehicles to the 2017 Chicago Auto Show, including the 2017 GMC Sierra SLT Elevation

If you’re a fan of the GMC Sierra or Canyon models, you might be enamored with the opulent Denali versions. Or maybe you prefer the affordability and simplicity of the base trims of these trucks. The automaker’s Elevation offering deserves its own time in the spotlight, however.

If you’re not familiar with the Elevation, it’s a trim option for the 2019 Sierra. And, the brand recently started offering an Elevation package as an add-on for the 2019 Canyon SLE trim.

Why “Elevation”

Apparently, the Denali trim inspired the Elevation name, as national marketing manager at GMC Canada Mark Alger shared with GM Authority.  However, unlike the Denali, the Elevation would be a cheaper entry-level model that would introduce new truck owners to the GMC experience. “Denali is our top-trim level, and we see Elevation as the gateway to the GMC brand, we felt it was fitting to have a distinct connection between entry-level models and top-shelf models at GMC.” Alger also articulated how the Elevation is “all about mountains, climbing, adventure, the outdoors.”

Elevation offerings

The Elevation comes in different forms, depending on whether you go with the Sierra or Canyon model. Here’s a brief overview of what the Sierra Elevation and Canyon SLE’s Elevation package include.

The Sierra 1500 Elevation

  • Your choice of either a 2.7-liter Turbo four-cylinder or 5.3-liter EcoTec3 V8 engine.
  • 355 horsepower and 383 lb-ft of torque when you pick the V8 powertrain.
  • Exterior features such as 20-inch black gloss painted aluminum wheels; body-color bumpers; cargo bed LED lighting, LED fog lamps, tailgate with EZ Lift assist, and available black-painted mirror caps.
  • Interior features such as a rear-window defogger and a theft-deterrent unauthorized entry system, as well as an available console vault, front bucket seats, and front center console.
  • Contemporary perks such as Keyless Open and Start, Remote Start, 12-volt auxiliary rear power outlet, and an available Bose premium sound system.

The Canyon SLE’s Elevation package

  • Your choice of either a 3.6-liter V6 LGZ or 2.8-liter LWN I4 turbo-diesel Duramax engine.
  • 308 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque when you pick the V6 powertrain.
  • Cosmetic details on the exterior include blacked-out 18-inch aluminum wheels and P265/60R18 all-season tires, as well as a body-color grille surround and a dark grille.
