No Refresh for 2020 Chevrolet Colorado

As competition in the midsize pickup segment intensifies, General Motors has decided to cancel a planned refresh for the 2020 Chevrolet Colorado. Instead, GM plans to focus on a more thorough overhaul of the truck that will be unveiled in a few years.

The Colorado ranks No. 2 in U.S. sales for its segment and is growing in popularity — selling 19.3 percent more models in 2018 than it did the year before. However, it’s facing a significant challenge, with the redesigned 2021 Nissan Frontier and popular newcomers like the Ford Ranger and Jeep Gladiator poised to grab a larger market share.

With these adversaries looming in the rearview mirror, GM is choosing to invest in a longer-term plan to elevate the Colorado. GM Authority reports that the automaker is expecting to release a next-gen model in 2023 or possibly a bit later. GM hasn’t decided yet whether to update the Colorado’s current platform or build it on an all-new one. Partial electrification could also be an option.

Small tweaks for 2020

Even though it won’t get a refresh, the Colorado will still offer a few changes (both additions and subtractions) for the new model year:

  • All trims will receive Tire Fill Alert.
  • A remote locking tailgate option has been expanded to the Work Truck trim.
  • The EZ-lift tailgate will be standard rather than optional for the LT trim.
  • The 2WD Z71 will no longer be available with an extended cab or long box.
  • The leather Jet Black/Dark Ash interior color option will be discontinued.
  • The Redline Luxury and RST Luxury special edition packages will be deleted.
  • The Safety Package with Lane Departure Warning and Forward Collision Alert will be newly available for the Z71.
