Toyota Invests $391 Million in San Antonio Truck Plant
Toyota has announced it is investing another $391 million at its San Antonio truck assembly plant, bringing its total investment in the plant to a total of $3 billion.
The automaker hasn’t been entirely detailed with regards to what the money will be spent on, other than that the investment is being made “to better serve customers,” and that it is part of a broader commitment to invest $13 billion in its U.S. operations through 2021.
Strong customer demand has motivated Toyota to make its plant more competitive in the long-term as well as more efficient but without compromising its ability to produce multiple different vehicles at the same time or introduce new and advanced manufacturing technologies.

“What a huge win for San Antonio. This is exactly the kind of project our city has strategically been preparing for—it shows we’re a competitive region ready for big investment from large manufacturers,” said San Antonio Mayor Ron Nirenberg. “Toyota’s investment in our people and our city creates opportunity that can change the lives of an entire generation.”
The San Antonio truck assembly plant is currently responsible for assembling the full-size Tundra pickup truck and midsize Tacoma pickup truck. It directly employs more than 3,200 team members, and indirectly employs over 7,200 when including its 23 on-site suppliers.
Toyota also says the investment comes with a commitment by Toyota Texas to continue funding local workforce development. For example, Alamo Promise — an organization whose mission is to enhance social and economic mobility, meet workforce demands throughout San Antonio, and end poverty — will receive $500,000 in donations from Toyota Texas over the next five years.
