The Buick Velite 6, the latest GM-produced EV for the Chinese market, has suffered a series of delays in recent months. However, after all those months of anticipation, the Velite 6 recently made its official debut last month.

GM had previously released a plug-in hybrid version of the Velite 6 for the Chinese market. Still, the all-electric version wasn’t ready to launch until just recently.

So what caused these delays for the Velite? According to reports, the locally-sourced A123 batteries initially failed to meet performance and safety standard during the testing period.

Still, Buick was finally able to work through these problems, leading to an EV that has a range of up to 301 km (187 miles) in the city. The Velite 6 is also able to produce up to 85 kW of power.

Buick will offer three different variants of the Velite 6 at three different price points. The Velite 6 starts at a price of RMB 165,800 ($24,800), with the most expensive variant costing RMB 185,800 ($27,800).

This is just the beginning for GM’s expanding EV lineup in China. An EV SUV model, named the Buick Enspire, is currently in development. This Enspire model will reportedly utilize the eMotion propulsion technology to reach a total range of up to 600 km (373 miles) on a single charge.

As GM rolls out more of these EVs in the Chinese market, and as American drivers warm up to electric vehicles, we could very likely see models like the Velite 6 and Enspire arrive on our shores in the near future.
