BMW Brand Sales Slightly Recover with 0.4% Sales Increase in June
BMW's fleet of passenger cars performed better in June, but year-to-date sales are still down
During May, BMW sales took a pretty big hit. Sales for the BMW brand proper were down 11%, while the company’s overall sales were down 11.1%. Fortunately for BMW, June brought back some of its good fortune−BMW brand sales were able to increase 0.4%.
A Look at Last June: BMW June Sales Top Both Mercedes-Benz and Lexus
28,962 BMW vehicles were sold last month, a 0.4% sales increase over the 28,855 BMW vehicles sold in June of 2016. While a 0.4% increase is certainly not a lot, it’s leaps and bounds better than an 11% sales decrease.
Sales of BMW passenger cars were still down in June. However, these sales were only down by 1.7%. A large portion of that sales recovery can be attributed to the BMW 5 Series. Sales for the 5 Series increased by 42.9% last month, with a total of 4,068 units sold.
BMW light trucks are still on the rise, with June sales equaling 9,333 units. This makes for a 4.9% sales increase over last June. BMW’s rising star in the light truck segment is undoubtedly the BMW X1. Sales for the X1 increased by 62.5% for a total of 3,221 units sold in June.
Unfortunately, BMW’s MINI brand shows no sign of such recovery. Sales for MINI were down 10.3% in June. Due to lower sales for MINI, the overall sales performance for BMW was down by 1.2% in June. BMW managed to sell 33,372 vehicles throughout the month.

With a total of 53,908 BMW light trucks sold this year, year-to-date sales for this class of vehicles are up 11.9%. Meanwhile, BMW’s fleet of passenger cars continues to struggle with a year-to-date decline of 9.6%.
MINI, meanwhile, is experiencing a year-to-date sales decline of 11.7%. As such, BMW has sold 171,291 vehicles at the end of 2017’s second quarter, a 4.1% sales decline compared to the 178,580 vehicles it had sold by this time last year.
