The experts at Consumer Reports and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety are helping parents of teen drivers make better decisions when choosing a safe vehicle for their kids. The two groups recently joined forces to create their first-ever list of 18 new vehicles, ranging in size and model type, that are safe, reliable options for inexperienced drivers. Earning a spot in the midsize car category is the 2020 Nissan Altima.

“It can be tempting to buy a tiny, bare-bones model for a teenager,” says IIHS President David Harkey. “But we know that teenagers are among the riskiest drivers, so it’s important not to skimp on safety. Spending a bit more for state-of-the-art crash protection and crash avoidance features is a worthy investment in your child’s future.”
Consumer Reports and IIHS approved every trim level of the 2020 Nissan Altima for teen drivers. After undergoing crash testing from the IIHS, the 2020 Altima earned a Top Safety Pick rating, as well as a 5-Star Overall Safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Nissan prioritizes safety in all its vehicles, and the Altima features two of the most advanced systems as standard features. Under proper conditions, Intelligent Forward Collision Warning lets you know when it’s time to decrease your speed when traffic you can’t see ahead of you has slowed down, while Automatic Emergency Braking warns you when you’re in danger of a frontal collision.
According to the IIHS, “Teen drivers have crash rates nearly four times those of drivers 20 and older per mile driven.”

This sobering statistic is a good reason to consider a car highly rated for safety and reliability, like the 2020 Nissan Altima, which earned a stamp of approval from both Consumer Reports and the IIHS.
