Dame Helen Mirren Lands Dream Role in ‘Fast and Furious 8’
It’s a great day to be alive.
At least two dreams are in the process of being fulfilled, according to an interview that Dame Helen Mirren recently gave to Elle magazine, in which the 70-year-old actress confirmed that she has been cast in Fast and Furious 8. That means that Helen Mirren has realized her dream of being in a Fast and Furious movie, and I am mere months away from realizing my dream of watching Helen Mirren in a Fast and Furious movie.
Back in March of last year, the legendary star of stage and screen shocked a Yahoo! interviewer by saying, “My great ambition is to be in a Fast and Furious movie. I so want to be a mad driver in a Fast and Furious movie.”
Yesterday, it was confirmed that Helen Mirren—who won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2007, and was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2003—has finally achieved her life’s greatest ambition.

Mirren let the news slip during an interview to promote her new film Eye In The Sky, a drama about the ethics of drone warfare, while she was expressing how much she loves performing in relevant films and theatre productions.
“I like to be serious,” Mirren said. “Of course, having said that I’m about to do Fast and Furious 8. But that’s for the fun of it. So maybe that’s what I want as well, some fun and some relevant, serious, important movies.”
That led to this delightful little exchange:
Are you a fan of cars?
Well, yes. I’ve always rather loved driving. I said, ‘I’ll be in it, but only if I’m allowed to drive if I do drive in it.’ But we’ll see. We’ll see how it transpires. Film is a wonderful thing and it can be so many different things. I don’t want to turn my back on any of the different ways movies can be. I love the movies. I love going to the films. I like very serious films, I love foreign films, and I love big, fun movies—as long as they’re well made and they’ve got good scripts. That’s the most important thing.

In addition to Mirren, the cast for Furious 8 includes Mad Max: Fury Road star Charlize Theron, series regular Vin Diesel, and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s weird beard. The film is filming now and set for an April 14, 2017 release date.

Patrick also enjoys old movies, shopping at thrift stores, going to ballgames, writing about those things, and watching Law & Order reruns. He just watches the original series, though, none of the spin-offs. And also only the ones they made before Jerry Orbach died. Season five was really the peak, in his opinion.
