Did You Find Nissan in ‘A Wrinkle in Time’?
This past weekend, A Wrinkle in Time opened in movie theaters nationwide. The critics were pretty divided in their opinions of this science fiction movie based on the book by Madeline L’Engle, but no matter what I was committed to seeing it. I loved the books in the Wrinkle Quintet when I was in middle school and the prospect of seeing my favorite characters on the big screen was something I couldn’t pass up. Besides, no matter what the reviews said I felt like it was my duty as one of the Nissan correspondents at The News Wheel to see the Nissan Leaf’s big screen debut for myself.

Leading up to the release of A Wrinkle in Time, Nissan has been all about its partnership with the Disney film. The most noticeable sign of support had to be the gorgeous Nissan Leaf EV vehicles parked at the worldwide premiere in Hollywood. Nissan also featured A Wrinkle in Time cast and crew members in videos for Black History Month and hosted a contest with director Ava DuVernay to find and support a talented new filmmaker. In the press release announcing Nissan’s role, the automaker mentioned that the latest Nissan Leaf would be featured in the film. But where is it?
If you haven’t seen this spellbinding film yet, the good news is that both of Nissan’s appearances occur in non-spoiler parts. I’ll admit that when I heard about the Nissan Leaf being featured in A Wrinkle in Time, I assumed it would be driven by the Drs. Murry, the parents in the movie. However, the Nissan Leaf popped up in a much more subtle way. Before the children start their extraterrestrial adventure, Charles Wallace and Meg Murry are walking their dog Fortinbras when they run into Calvin, one of Meg’s classmates. As the group continues to walk down the sidewalk, viewers can catch a glimpse of a silvery gray all-new Nissan Leaf parked on the street behind them.

The next Nissan cameo was not for the Nissan Leaf but the brand’s advanced Nissan Intelligent Mobility plan to build cars of the future that help prevent accidents and make the road a better place to be. When the Drs. Murry are presenting their scientific work on wrinkles in space and time to a crowd, it is at a center created by NASA, the U.S. Air Force, and Nissan Intelligent Mobility. The name of the center and its sponsor logos are proudly displayed under the projector screen for all to see.
If you haven’t made it to see A Wrinkle in Time yet, I encourage you to head out now. This children’s film is a beautiful work of imagination all about the importance of science, light, and love. It doesn’t hurt that it has an all-star cast and a visionary director to lead it forward. I had a fun time when I went to the movie with my (totally adult) book club, and I now have a life goal to be more like Mrs Who when I grow up (her wardrobe and house were fantastic). If nothing else, A Wrinkle in Time will give you a break from the crazy world around you.
