Vehicle owners in the Wolverine State will soon have a new option when purchasing a license plate: the digital Rplate. Michigan’s Department of State partnered with Reviver Auto, the company who makes Rplates, to pass the legislation.

Michigan goes high-tech

According to Digital Trends, drivers will have two different Rplates to choose from — the Rplate Essential and the Rplate Pro. Though both models feature plate customization, personalized messages, LTE connectivity, and backlit HD displays, only the second model will have “advanced telematics.”

Both plates will be available in the spring of this year. Per Reviver Auto’s website, the Rplate Essential costs $499 and the Rplate Pro costs $799, excluding installation charges.

Advantages of digital license plates

There are quite a few benefits to adopting digital license plates. The Rplate design will bring greater convenience and expanded functions for vehicle owners and the general public. First of all, these plates will auto-renew, sparing drivers the hassle of manually renewing their vehicle registration each year. The plates will also be able to display public alerts such as weather notifications and Amber Alerts. The LTE technology feature will enable GPS tracking, so businesses and the government can track staff vehicles.

The Rplates will also push the boundaries of conventional vanity plates for greater personalization. Vehicle owners will be able to advertise a favorite sports team, charity, or organization that they’re passionate about. Additionally, companies can display ads for their products and services on the plates to expand their marketing efforts.

We’ll have to wait a bit longer to determine whether Michigans prefer conventional plates or the new Rplate. Stay tuned for more details on this development.
