GM Testing New V8 Engine for 2020 Silverado, Sierra HD Trucks

2020 GMC Sierra/Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD engines

The all-new 2020 Chevy Silverado HD is likely to include a new 6.6-liter V8 engine

General Motors is completely redesigning its heavy-duty trucks for 2020, and those new models could include a new V8 engine.

GM Authority reports that the 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD and the 2020 GMC Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD will carry an all-new 6.6-liter V8. It’s expected to make about 400 horsepower and 450 lb-ft of torque.

Those numbers are an improvement on the HD lineup’s current 60-liter V8, which gets 360 horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque. This engine was last updated in 2010, so the new one is likely to be quite a bit more high-tech, too, utilizing newer systems like cylinder deactivation and direct injection to increase its efficiency.

The new 6.6-liter V8 is reportedly being tested by Navistar, which also works with GM on the Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD Medium Duty models. That could indicate that the new engine is being developed for those larger models as well.

GM’s 2020 HD models will also offer a 6.6-liter Duramax diesel engine that puts out 445 horsepower and 910 lb-ft of torque. That engine was just introduced in 2017, so it’s not likely to feature any major updates for the next model year.

The new Silverado and Sierra HD should come out in the third quarter of next year. So far, details have been sparse. An image released this spring indicated that the Silverado 2500HD and 3500HD will feature bolder, more intimidating proportions and styling. Based on what we’ve seen from the new 2019 Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500, 2020 HD models will also be bigger, lighter, more capable, and more loaded with convenience and connectivity features.
