The most successful Hyundai model released last year in India was undoubtedly the Elite i20. The second-generation i20 supermini ascribed to Hyundai’s prestigious Fluidic Sculpture 2.0 design language, resulting in a compact sedan perfect for premium buyers.

Building off that success, Hyundai India is preparing to release the i20 Active next week. The global debut of the i20 Active is scheduled for March 18th, when it will be concurrently launched in the Indian Market.

Hyundai designers in Rüsselsheim, Germany, wanted to create a miniature SUV designed for rough Indian roads. The result is the i20 Active, which will be launching in New Delhi next week, followed by Bangalore and Mumbai.

So far, the only indication of what the i20 Active will look like are a pair of concept sketches released by Hyundai. Being based on the highly successful Elite i20, it will probably have similar drivetrains, though the i20 Active will sport a larger size and sportier design. Based on the sketches, added features will include new bumpers with circular reflectors, a roof spoiler, 17-inch alloy wheels, plastic cladding, roof rails, and higher ground clearance.

While not much is known about the mini-crossover under the hood, speculations are that it will carry the same engine as the Elite i20, probably in gasoline and diesel options, with a manual transmission.

For having a lot of the unnecessary frills Indian consumers don’t care for (like touchscreen audio and cruise control), the i20 Active is anticipated to have a price slightly above what’s considered “competitive.” Still, its simplicity is bound to appeal to Indian consumers who care more about suspension and brakes than just unnecessary tech features.
