Late last month, The News Wheel reported that a new rendition of the Chevrolet Onix would be heading to the Chinese automotive market. Despite this, the Onix will not be built in China, but in Brazil.
The next generation of the Chevrolet Onix will utilize Chevrolet’s Global Emerging Markets architecture, abbreviated GEM for short. Buick models that utilize the GEM platform are primarily developed by the Pan-Asia Technical Automotive Center (PTAC).
Chevrolet vehicles that utilize the GEM platform will instead be developed by GM Brazil. GM decided to settle on Brazil to develop Chevy cars with GEM platforms due to its previous success in producing compact cars in the South American country.
Currently, the Onix nameplate is utilized for Chevrolet’s subcompact hatchback in the Latin American region. The sedan variant of the Onix bears the Chevrolet Prisma moniker. Still, rumors suggest that both the hatchback and sedan models will bear the Onix nameplate moving forward.
The second-generation Chevrolet Onix’s release in China will be the model’s first expansion beyond the Latin American region. It will join Chevrolet’s lineup of other sedans in China, including the Cruze, Malibu, Monza, Cavalier, SAIL3, and Camaro.
The vehicle will launch in South America during the second half of the year. Meanwhile, the model is expected to be released in China around the same time.
